It allows for a greater connection with the food being grown, the growing process itself and the cultivation of a crop through its entire reproductive system. By saving seeds we learn to be totally sufficient on the land! Lisa Bloodnick, from Bloodnick Family Farms, a well-known seed steward, who has been growing out rare seeds for the Experimental Farm Network, amongst others, will be sharing some of her knowledge and practices, so that you too can start saving your own seeds to grow your own food and medicine! Bloodnick Family Farm is a diverse, horse powered family farm serving our community sustainably raised produce since 1992. We have operated our popular CSA for 25 years. In addition to raising produce, herbs and flowers we also raise a small flock of heritage breed sheep and make maple syrup. Lisa is also very involved with seed saving and is working on several special projects. She maintains a collection featuring among many things, approximately 1000 bean varieties. Women on the Land: Intro to Carpentry

Human Scale Water Management with Edible Acres

Join Sean Dembrosky of Edible Acres for a detailed look at human scale water management in the landscape. For 10 years he’s been slowly evolving how water moves, stores, shifts, releases, etc in a 6 acre challenging site. All with hand tools. We’ll see small scale ponds, silt traps, swales, contour raised beds and discuss the many techniques and approaches you can use in your landscape to gently and steadily suggest paths and resting spaces for water. The key focus with this talk is to help people feel empowered to start making small shifts with the tools they have and evolve the system over time. You can do all this! Cost: $15-40, sliding scale. Farming While Black: African Diasporic Wisdom for Farming and Food Justice

Some of our most cherished sustainable farming practices – from organic agriculture to the farm cooperative and the CSA – have roots in African wisdom. Yet, discrimination and violence against African-American farmers has led to our decline from 14 percent of all growers in 1920 to less than 2 percent today, with a corresponding loss of over 14 million acres of land. Further, Black communities suffer disproportionately from illnesses related to lack of access to fresh food and healthy natural ecosystems. Soul Fire Farm, cofounded by author, activist, and farmer Leah Penniman, is committed to ending racism and injustice in our food system. Through programs such as the Black-Latinx Farmers Immersion, a sliding-scale farmshare CSA, and Youth Food Justice leadership training, Soul Fire Farm is part of a global network of farmers working to increase farmland stewardship by people of color, restore Afro-indigenous farming practices, and end food apartheid. And now, with the new book Farming While Black, Soul Fire Farm extends that work by offering the first comprehensive manual for African-heritage people ready to reclaim our rightful place of dignified agency in the food system.
