Authors: The National Farm to School Network
The National Farm to School Network (NFSN) launched a pioneering and highly anticipated new resource, Evaluation for Transformation: A Cross Sectoral Evaluation Framework for Farm to School, that defines the outcomes that farm to school has the potential to achieve and offers common language, guidelines and metrics to understand those outcomes for the first time. The framework is organized around four key sectors: public health, community economic development, education and environmental quality. Beyond the four sectors, the framework is also structured around three levels of action: program, research and policy.

Building the Movement: Labor in the Northeast Food System

More than 7.6 million people in this country are employed in food and beverage service and related jobs. Yet many – perhaps most – of these food sector workers remain largely invisible to the American consumer. This paper explores the strengths and weaknesses of the current system and encourages us to develop strategies that will move towards long-term systems change in which the outcomes include justice and fairness for all, including the food system labor force.

Reporting on the Land Grant Stakeholder Rule: A Commentary from Northeast U.S.

This report presents an overview of the first reports that the 14 land-grant universities in the Northeast submitted to USDA-CSREES in response to the Stakeholder Rule, which Congress passed to encourage broader and more transparent roles for stakeholders in the system of Agricultural Experiment Stations, Land Grant Universities, and Cooperative Extension. The report addresses the complexities and challenges associated with the Stakeholder Rule process and includes recommendations.

Northeast Farms to Food: Understanding Our Region’s Food System

Northeast Farms to Food (NEFTF), published in 2002 and updated in 2004 and 2006, provides a comprehensive look at the Northeast food and farming system from production through processing and distribution to consumption and diet. It includes over 100 charts and graphs, “farm and food facts,” explanatory text and a chapter on findings and recommendations.
