Dave and Anita Avvisato began their modern, 15-acre farmstead operation eight years ago with a small vegetable garden. From these humble beginnings, the farm has since evolved to encompass bees and chickens (in the same fenced area), horses and hay, field crops and high tunnels, as well as solar power and on-farm compost, all in a thoughtfully designed, enriching flow of fertility. The view at Far Away Farms is to limit inputs and focus on transforming sources of waste into resources of value.  

On Saturday, July 29, Dave and Anita will host a field day and lunch at Far Away Farms, to share the logic and specifics of their farming system, as well as their thoughts and lessons learned, over the years, with those interested. Once a hobby for the couple, the farm is now a full-time vocation for Dave. The Avvisato’s hope is that this event might be able to inspire and help others achieve their small farm dream, while also showing current small-scale growers different ways to think about their operations.

Far Away Farms sells on-farm and at market, as well as to a grower’s cooperative and some retail accounts. They currently manage around 200 laying hens, dozens of beehives, horses, about ten acres of hay and pasture, and two acres or so of vegetables, including a high tunnel. Their primary source of fertility comes from their on-farm compost system, powered by manure and crop residues. They are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Certified.

This event is Saturday, July 29, 10am-2pm. The rain date is the following weekend, on Saturday, August 5. Lunch is included with the registration fee of $15 for PASA members, $20 for non-members.
